Buying domain name

I’ve purchased dozens and dozens of domain names over the years, but the most important domain I buying domain namehave purchased by far is my own name.

Yes, perhaps it’s the misguided notion that one day I will be famous enough, like Oprah, Madonna or even Joel Comm, that my little old name becomes a viable commodity on its own. At the very least, it could become a valuable piece of virtual real estate which is why I decided it was important to buy my own name in a dot com version.

Buying domain name…

It’s important for several entirely selfish reasons. First, I don’t want any other yahoo owning what rightfully belongs to me. I’ve lived with my name (first name anyway) for forty + years now. It’s unique, it’s mine, my mother invented it at the time and I don’t want anyone else owning it but me.

Secondly, if you are branding a presence on the internet writing articles and using your real name, you are inviting people all over the world to learn more about you. That means anyone, anywhere can Google you to find out more. I’ve already had old college friends do just that and find me because I’ve put myself out there as an internet pioneer. Buying domain name made it that much easier for them to find me.

And yes, if your name is on the internet at this moment, you too are a pioneer. Though it is true that there are millions of people showing up online with something to sell you, show you or educate you with, the truth remains that there are 6.7 billion people on the planet. We are the few pioneers wading out into the deep water here.

Only 21% of people on Earth use the internet and of that even fewer are publishing or selling on line.

That said, my final reason for buying your domain name is, well I don’t actually have a final reason. The first two should be enough for you. It just seemed important somehow that I do it, so I did. And rather than let GoDaddy make AdSense revenue off my unused page, I installed a WordPress blog and here we are.

Think it over. Buying domain name may prove to be nothing but a vanity play, but hey, I’ve earned the right to be a little vain now and again. Besides, my favorite book in High School was The Little Prince and he said, “You are unique in all the world”.  Damn right I am.
